Britney Spears, a one-time queen in the pop music industry, has been arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
Spears was detained by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) after being seen driving her BMW “erratically at a high rate of speed” on a motorway.
The California Highway Patrol said the singer showed signs of impairment and submitted to a series of field sobriety tests after she was pulled over.
She was released from jail in the early hours of Thursday morning and is due to appear at Ventura County Superior Court on 4 May.
Her car was impounded after the incident, according to jail records, which also list her occupation as “celebrity”.
A spokesperson for Spears said her actions were “completely inexcusable” and she was taking time to be with her children and that her loved ones were coming up with an “overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”
Meanwhile, Spears’ former spouses have sent their well wishes to the pop princess following her arrest.
Sam Asghari, who was married to Spears from 2022 to 2024, called on the public to give his ex-wife privacy while she moves forward from the arrest.
Kevin Federline, with whom Spears shares her two sons said he “hopes for the best” for Spears.
