MTV, the iconic music television channel, shut down after over 40 years in Europe, Brazil, France, Poland, Australia, and other countries.

MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live went off the air on December 31, 2025.

The very song that launched MTV back on August 1, 1981, “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles, was played as the final farewell on MTV Music before it signed off for good.

With newer music television channels and YouTube gaining popularity, MTV lost viewers over the years.

MTV launched in the United States in 1981 and introduced VJs or video jockeys presenting pop music videos.

The Live Aid concert, a 16-hour broadcast that also marked the birth of MTV Video Music Awards, was among defining milestones of MTV.

The brand will continue to have a presence on social media and Paramount’s streaming service Paramount+.
