Grammy award winning singer Nelly Furtado has announced she will be quitting music amid cruel body-shaming attacks.

Furtado, 45, took to Instagram to share the unexpected news, saying it was time for her to focus on ‘other creative and personal endeavors.’

The singer had returned to music just last year (2024) with her album “7” which was her first studio album since 2017.

Best known for her global hit “I’m Like a Bird”, Furtado said she has decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future.

“I have enjoyed my career immensely , and I still love writing music as I have always seen it as a hobby I was lucky enough to make into a career . I’ll identify as a songwriter forever. I deeply thank all of those who have worked so hard to help me make my pop dreams come true on a creative and organizational level . I thank all my brilliant collaborators and loyal champions,” she said.

She did not mention a reason but it came just weeks after she was body shamed on social media.

Furtado had recently brushed off comments on social media about her figure while headlining Manchester Pride, proudly embracing her natural curves.

A mother of three children with her oldest daughter aged 22, Furtado recalled that her 25 year music career has reached a whole new generation of fans and she couldn’t be happier about that.
